Distinguished Alumni Award
The Distinguished Alumni Awards were created in 1968 by the SRU Alumni Association to recognize alumni with professional and personal accomplishments. Alumni are nominated by alumni, faculty and staff and submitted to the Office of Alumni Engagement.
Criteria for Nomination
- Must be a graduate of SRU with either a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree.
- Nominees must have graduated at least 10 years or more from Slippery Rock University.
- Must translate their experience into distinguished service in public, business, professional, educational, or service and philanthropy to the SRU Community.
- Must also distinguish themselves by reaching the highest level of accomplishment and possess the highest standards of integrity and character to positively reflect and enhance the prestige of SRU.
- Must demonstrate a commitment to success in his/her professional and/or personal life since graduation.
- Current members of the SRU Alumni Association Board of Directors, the Awards Committee and employees of SRU may not be considered for this award.
- Recipient MUST be present to accept the award at the SRU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet Friday evening during Homecoming scheduled for October 11, 2024. An alternate will be selected in the event that the first recipient cannot attend.
- We accept nominations anytime throughout the year. More information about 2023 nominations coming soon!
- Nominations may be made by anyone other than the nominee.
- On the nomination form, you may list the names of 3-5 individuals who will be submitting letters of support for the nomination. Each letter should be no more than two pages in length and should address different areas listed on the criteria form. You may submit no more than five supporting letters.
- You may also submit newspaper articles, clippings, photographs and additional materials as part of the nomination packet.

Additional Information
- The selection of the recipient is made by the Alumni Awards Committee and approved by the Alumni Association Board of Directors and the President’s Office.
- The award recipients and nominators will be notified in the spring and will be recognized at the annual SRU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet Friday evening during Homecoming in October.
- The recipient should prepare a brief statement to present at the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet.
- The nominee should submit a current resume or curriculum vitae to the Alumni Awards Committee within a week of being informed of their nomination.
- The recipient should be prepared to submit a professional headshot photograph to be used for publicity purposes by SRU.
Definitions
Personal and Professional Achievement: Use of traditional or innovative approaches in enhancing personal and professional growth. Other factors include personal recognition received, the balance between personal and career movement and development, professional recognition, professional accomplishments and significant contributions to nominee’s profession.
Community Service: Scope and breadth of service nominee has provided; the impact of his/her actions in the community in a variety of service initiatives. (i.e. involvement in civic organizations such as Rotary, Kiwanis, United Way, city council, etc.)
University Service: Nominee’s support of University initiatives, involvement in University programs and/or service on University boards, committees or project teams. (i.e. speaks to classes, assists with organization of Alumni events, volunteers with Career Services, etc.)
Philanthropy: Annual and lifetime giving to Slippery Rock University.
