Slippery Rock University was at the heart of Earl J. Birdy and Shirley Dean Birdy’s personal and professional growth. Both studied Physical Education and Shirley was a member of Phi Delta Pi, a national professional fraternity for women in physical education. Earl competed in track and field and Shirley was a majorette. Earl often told the story of the first time that he saw Shirley marching across the football field. Earl and Shirley graduated together in 1951, were married on June 19, 1952, and celebrated over 70 years of marriage. They shared a passion for teaching physical education and helping others. Early in their careers, both were American Red Cross water safety instructors, scuba instructors and swim instructors. Both taught at St. Edmunds Academy and multiple pools in the summer. In addition, Earl trained water safety instructors and Shirley taught synchronized swimming, produced water shows and volunteered as a swimming coach for the Pennsylvania Senior Olympics. Shirley retired from the Steel Valley School District where she had taught health, physical education, and swimming. She also coached the swimming and volleyball teams.
